The market entry of afamelanotide as a first-in-class drug is the culmination of a decade long R&D program, and most of all signifies Clinuvel’s ability to focus.
It is most important to communicate afamelanotide’s novel pharmaceutical properties and its clinical effects. Here we worked for over 2 years with various groups and third parties and agencies to align all views, whereby clear product differentiation was key in our choices.
In identifying the proper position for afamelanotide we analyzed novel pharmaceutical products and UV related dermatological and skin care products. Afamelanotide differentiates itself from any other products due to its pharmaceutical novelty.
Naturally, a wider market analysis was made the past years, and the shortlist of trademarks befitting afamelanotide became narrower in time. A consensus was found to stay with a name which would carry the essence of photoprotective skin care. Additionally, the global reach of Clinuvel was to be represented in afamelanotide’s brand name.
The European Medicines Agency’s Name Review Group (NRG) and the Agency’s Committee for Human Medicinal Products (CHMP) recently awarded, after analysis and further searches into historical pharmaceutical naming, the brand and trade name for afamelanotide (generic name) which had been proposed by Clinuvel.
Today, Clinuvel is proud to launch the trade name of afamelanotide which will be used in Europe and Switzerland. In reflecting the skin’s cellular balance between regeneration, programmed cell death and survival, we will use and brand afamelanotide in Europe and Switzerland under the unique name:
